1317 Bathroom Remodel: Demolition & Framing

The Lead abatement basically rendered our house unusable, since the limits of destruction were our entire stair hall upstairs and down. So we scheduled the demolition for a Friday and Saturday and took a mini vacation so that we would be out of town for the worst of it.

When we returned from a restful weekend, we had a clean house and a (temporary) double-height space.

Three days later, the floor is re-framed and the studs surrounding the tub are in place.

After a hard week of work by the two-man crew, we can better imagine the view from our new shower.

1317 Bathroom Remodel: Design & Bid

In the new bathroom design, we have swapped the toilet and vanity, and located the shower head on the opposite wall to allow for a glass panel between the tub and the window.  We are removing the radiator and replacing it with a wall hung towel warmer, and we are reversing the door swing to visually open the space up even more.

The vanity we chose is a wall-hung unit in gray oak veneer.  The floor and shower enclosure will be brown porcelain tile from Daltile, polished on the floor and matte on the wall. We are exposing the brick wall behind the toilet, and painting the remaining walls a very light gray.

We bid the project out to three contractors that we found through Urban Referrals.
When chosing a contractor, price is not the only issue we consider.  We look for good communication skills, someone who can follow our drawings, and someone who is interested in building a relationship. The contractor that we hired, Capitol Home Remodeling, checked off all the boxes.

1317 Bathroom Remodel: Goodbye to the drippy bath

Three or four years ago, we returned from Thanksgiving vacation to find the ceiling above our entry hall (and below our bathroom) on the floor in front of us.  I solved the problem (which I caused), tore out the rest of the ceiling, and hung a simple white sheet below the joists until we "got around" to remodeling the bathroom.

So here we are 3 or 4 years later and the time has come to say farewell to the old drippy bath.

Goodbye vinyl floor...

Goodbye door that swings in the wrong direction...

Goodbye clearance issues...

Goodbye chamfered medicine cabinet...

Goodbye plastic shower liner...

We will miss you most of all
